This page is for assorted computer hardware items:

Computers that I have owned

Across the years I have owned a number of different computers. Most of them are from companies that are no longer in business. While there are still pictures and specifications available I thought I would try to gather them all up.

  • Timex Sinclair ZX80 - a notebook sized computer that used a TV as a display.
  • Zorba 'portable' computer - A sewing machine sized C/PM computer.
  • Xerox 820 was my first CP/M system with a hard disk in it.
  • Monorail Computer was an attempt in creating an 'All in One' form factor.
  • Palm Pilot has been my constant companion since 1998. I use my Palm Pilot for just about everything from addresses to photos. I now carry a Treo 300, a combination cell phone and Palm Pilot.

Each of the current systems is named after one of the Seven Dwarves. For example the machine I use the most is named Grumpy.

Multiple systems

I'm interested in effective ways to use multiple computers at one time. The two ways have been broken down to Cluster Computing and Utility Computing or Grid Computing. Clusters are systems made up of similar hardware under a central control. Utility is different hardware / software working together. An example is the SETI @ home project.

Part of having multiple systems is how they are connected.

Always on the lookout for small, fanless systems that can be used as standalone devices. Things like the Linksys NSLU2 and the AMD_PIC.
